Library may become one floor shorter
Tórshavn City Council will tonight decide on a recommendation from the Finance Committee that the current reconstruction of the library should not include the fourth floor.
The reason behind this recommendation is that the City Council wishes to use the fourth floor as office space for its administration. The plan is to move the City Council’s Health and Care Service administration, which is currently renting the premises on Niels Finsens gøta 31, into the fourth floor of the library building, located on Niels Finsens gøta 7. This move is estimated to save the City Council DKK 265,000 in annual rental costs.
Staff at the library have sent an open letter to city council members urging them to vote against the proposal.
The City Council, which purchased the library building in 2009, offered the fourth floor to the library a few years ago.
According to library staff, the plan at the time was to use one part of the fourth floor as library staff offices and one part as a meal preparation facility for day-care centres, a toy collection, a fairy-tale room and as a play room for children and teenagers.
Preparations for the reconstruction work at the City Library started in 2014.
On 1 April next year, the City Library will celebrate its 50th anniversary.
