Faroese people are too heavy, according to a Gallup survey commissioned by the Public Health Council.

The survey shows that more than half of the Faroese population is overweight, and 13 percent can be classified as being obese.

Since 2003, the number of overweight Faroese people has grown from 44 percent to 56 percent, while the number of people with ‘normal weight’ has decreased.

According to the survey, significantly more men are overweight or obese than women. One in three Faroese men is classified as having ‘normal weight’, while half of the surveyed women fall into this category.

Men aged 40 or above are most prominent in the overweight category, but men aged 18-24 are also well-represented in this category, at 41 percent.

Suðurstreymoy is the region with the most ‘normal weight’ people, at 50 percent.
