The new replacement ferry will be suitable for all routes in the Faroes – including services to the small islands.

This is the response from Hilmar Eliasen, CEO of national transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins, after critics have claimed that the new replacement ferry is too large for certain routes and too small for others.

Opposition MPs also say it is problematic that the new ferry, known as a trimaran, can only carry three cars.

But Eliasen says that tests with similar trimarans in Norway have proved conclusively that the new ferry can be used on all routes in the Faroes, including the smaller ports.

Responding to the ferry’s three-car limit criticism, Eliasen says the ferry needs to be relatively small to be suitable for the smaller ports, and that this is a necessary compromise as the need for a new replacement ferry is urgent.

The replacement ferry is estimated to cost DKK 34 million, and it will take about a year to build.
