New Copenhagen emissary later this year
The Prime Minister is aiming to appoint a new Head of the Representation of the Faroes in Copenhagen in the latter half of 2019.
Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen’s announcement was part of a reply to MP Edmund Joensen’s questions regarding the Representation of the Faroes in Copenhagen.
Joensen asked the same question in 2016 when the then head of the representation had completed his term. It was decided at the time not to appoint a new emissary due to a planned assessment of the representative office system.
Sigmund Isfeldt completed his term in autumn 2016, and he has served the same function since then but is now based in the Faroes as part of his job at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This role has included regular trips to the representative office in Copenhagen.
Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen says that Mr Isfeldt was sent back to the Faroes for a while to turn the government’s focus on Faroese trade relations with Japan, South Korea and China.
This setup has worked well, says the Prime Minister, as Japanese, Korean and Chinese authorities use their representative offices in Copenhagen as a link to Faroese authorities.
But the plan is to appoint a new Head of the Representation of the Faroes in Copenhagen in the latter half of this year, says the Prime Minister.
