Union warns against municipal building plan
The National Housing Association should supply all housing for elderly people, rather than having many new public contractors build homes.
Føroya Arbeiðsgevarafelag (the Employers’ Union) is now urging politicians not to grant local councils the authority to supply homes for people aged over 64, as a new bill proposes.
The union argues that local councils already have the authority to build nursing homes, respite care homes and rehabilitation homes. It is not a municipal task to supply housing for ‘normal’ citizens.
A bill like this one, argues the union, makes it even less attractive for private operators to enter a market in which large public institutions are operating under highly favourable conditions.
