Two new laws on security and intelligence are currently being processed by Faroese legal authorities.

One is about the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET), with the objective of updating and clarifying the legal authority of PET in the Faroes.

This law proposes stricter supervision of how PET processes personal details of Faroese citizens.

Increased transparency of PET screenings

The law seeks secure openness and transparency in all PET-related activities in the Faroes.

It aims to protect individual legal rights by ensuring that PET always has a fair and relevant cause for collecting, registering or in other ways processing personal data such as political activity.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, which oversees the preparation of the laws, PET’s activities in the Faroes are unlikely to change significantly if the new law is passed.

Police law adjusted to Faroese circumstances

The other law proposal is about the day-to-day activities of the Faroese police force, including provisions about the use of power.

However, the Prime Minister’s Office is keen to point out that there is no plan to limit or expand the existing intervention powers.

The plan is to introduce these two Danish laws – the PET law dating from 2014 and the police law from 2004 – in the Faroes with the necessary adjustments required to suit Faroese circumstances.
