Kalsoy’s bus services “inadequate”
Kalsoy is seeing a huge growth in tourist numbers every year, rising from 38,335 in 2014 to 57,594 last year – an increase of almost 20,000 visitors in four years.
Although these are high figures for a relatively small island, there are rarely problems when it comes to transporting all these people to and from the island.
The big problem is the bus services on the island, according to Olivur Thomsen, the head of Visit Kalsoy.
Too many cars
From 1 May, the bus service in Kalsoy will be coordinated with all scheduled ferry services to and from the island. But this is not enough, says Thomsen.
“We’re seeing far too many tourists who want to bring their own cars to Kalsoy. Our island simply cannot handle this kind of traffic volume,” he says. “The only solution is a bus service that can meet this massive demand. The current service cannot take big luggage or baby carriage, and this needs to change.”
He suggests that national transport company Strandfaraskip Landsins should help solve this problem.
