Acute shortage of pedagogues
The law requires that 67 percent of day-care centre staff are qualified pedagogues.
This figure is only 37 percent today, and that is a big concern for the new Day Care Council, which has been set up to advise local authorities on pedagogical issues.
After its first meeting, the council has set out to shed light on the importance of good day-care centres in the public eye and in the political system. A key objective is to increase the number of qualified staff in day-care centres across the country.
The council is made up of representatives from the Municipalities Association, the Ministry of Culture, the University of the Faroe Islands, the Equal Status Council and the Pedagogue Union.
According to chairwoman Hildur Patursson, the council will present its first formal recommendations within a few months.
