The number of schoolchildren with a foreign background is on a steady increase, and this is putting great pressure on Faroese schools.

According to Tórhallur við Gil, a committee member of the Teachers’ Association, it is becoming a matter of urgency to come up with an overall plan on how to accommodate pupils with a non-Faroese background.

“This is a massive challenge for pupils and teachers alike,” he says.

“Our teachers are not equipped to cater to all the needs of non-Faroese pupils, and the inevitable consequence is that these pupils do not receive the same standard of education that the Faroese pupils do.”

Teachers are doing their best to accommodate the needs of each pupil, but with the ever-increasing number of foreign schoolchildren, this task has become overwhelming, and there is now an urgent need for an overall plan on teaching for pupils with a foreign background, he adds.
