Members of the public should contact the police if they see drones flying above populated areas or within five kilometres of Vágar Airport, because this is illegal.

Police have recently received many reports of unauthorised drone activity, mostly from local citizens.

In most of these instances, it has been foreign nationals who have been operating the drones.

Special permit required

Operating drones in populated areas and within five kilometres of the airport requires a special permit from the Danish Transport Authority. Many private drone operators do not have this permit.

“It is obviously not always easy to provide details when reporting drone activity, as the devices have a long range. But it is important that we receive these reports so we have something to go on,” says the police spokesperson, adding that illegal drone activity near the Trælanípan tourist hotspot is not uncommon, which is unfortunate as it is within five kilometres from the airport.

“This is not only illegal, it can easily become a direct flight hazard, so we urge the public to report any such activity to the police.”
