Vágar Airport has featured three times on a list of airports said to be located in affected areas with high risk of transmission of the COVID-19 infection.

Since the corona outbreak, the EASA (the European Union Aviation Safety Agency) has been compiling lists of airports with particularly high risks of COVID-19 infection.

The first list, published on 13 March, did not feature any European airports, but three days later, 11 European airports had made the list.

All these 11 airports on the EASA list were located in “high-risk” areas such as Northern Italy, France, Austria, Germany and Spain.

But on 30 March, Vágar Airport was added to the list and remained there until 18 April.

Regin Jakobsen, CEO of Vágar Airport, is not aware of any specific reason for the inclusion in the list, but he reckons it may be due to the relatively high transmission rates in the Faroes in mid-March.

Most regular flights to and from the Faroes were cancelled on 17 March.

The EASA list is developed in coordination with EASA member states and is based on information from WHO, ECDC and other public health institutes.
