Corona ward closes down

Corona ward closes down
With no coronavirus in the country, there is no need for a dedicated corona ward, says National Hospital management

29.05.2020 - 05:58

The last person to be hospitalised at the corona ward was discharged in early April, and the last positive COVID-19 test was registered on 22 April.

With no use for the corona ward, the National Hospital management has decided to shut it down.

“We have a clear emergency plan in place should a new wave of COVID-19 occur,” says National Hospital COO Tummas í Garði.

He adds that the hospital is well equipped to deal with a possible second wave of infection, partly due to a new testing system which can yield reliable results within three hours, compared to the previous system which took about 24 hours.

The closure of the corona ward means that the entire B7 unit will reopen for medical patients, as the children’s ward, which had been provisionally moved to B7, moves back to its regular B5 unit where the pop-up Corona ward was located.
