The Faroe Islands will have a population of 57.455 in 40 years’ time, according to a population projection by Statistics Faroe Islands.

In December 2060, 46,1 percent of the population will live in Tórshavn municipality.

There will be a gradual population increase up to December 2056, after which time the number will decrease.

In December this year, the total population will be 53,573.

Surplus of men set to continue

This projection is calculated based on births, deaths and migration rates since 1985.

The current surplus of men is set to continue, with the projection estimating that there will be about 2,000 more men than women in December 2060.

Age distribution will see significant changes. The ‘40 and older’ age group, currently making up 48.7 percent of the total population, will have increased by 6 percent in 2060. And there will be 141 men and 224 in the 95-99 age group, according to the projection.
