The G! festival has been called off after a government offer of compensation for music festivals that decide to cancel due to the current Covid situation.

“This indecisiveness and lack of clarity from the authorities has generated a lot of bad publicity for G!. This offer now puts us under even greater pressure, so we no longer have any choice but to give up,” chief G! organiser Sigvør Laksá said this afternoon.

“The compensation means that G! will survive financially, but we are extremely disappointed with how the authorities have handled this situation.”

When Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen announced the compensation offer earlier this afternoon, he insisted that the government has been willing to provide cancellation compensation along the same lines as it did when last year’s festivals were cancelled.

“We are only announcing this publicly now, one week before the start of the festival, because the Covid situation has taken such a sudden turn. We want to make sure that no festival organisers feel pressured to go ahead with their event for fear of the financial consequences of cancelling.”

He added that the compensation scheme will have a retroactive effect, meaning that other cancelled music festivals will be eligible to apply for compensation.
