A photovoltaic power station, also known as a solar farm, was taken into use in Sumba, Suðuroy, yesterday.
The solar farm has an annual production capacity of 160 megawatt hours, which is 20 percent of the town’s total electricity use.
The first two years will function as a trial project. Although this is not the ideal season for solar power, national energy supplier SEV decided to set up the solar farm now to test its strength in winter.
SEV is also planning to set up seven wind turbines in Suðuroy next year.
