New school may not be ready for start of term
With less than eight weeks until the start of the school term, pressure is mounting on the team behind the construction of Tórshavn’s new school building, Skúlin á Fløtum.
“It is too early to say whether we will finish the building in time for the start of term,” says Sigurð Vang, who heads Tórshavn City Council’s culture department, which oversees the construction project.
“Most of the actual building work has been completed. We are now awaiting various approvals, and the authorities need to ensure the building meets all the safety requirements, so we cannot rule out the possibility of opening the school a couple of weeks after the start of term.”

Vang acknowledges that this possible delay would be inconvenient, but he insists that the teaching would not be affected, as the existing school buildings are perfectly suitable.
“We are taking all necessary precautions to ensure that this new building meets all the requirements. If our work were to drag on for a couple of weeks, that wouldn’t be a big price to pay for a building which should be in operation for at least 40 years.”
The new school will house 850 pupils and just over 100 staff members.
