Fundraiser nets record donations for cancer
Yesterday’s “Føroyar móti krabba” (“Faroes against cancer”) fundraiser reached a record high of DKK 5,743,207 in donations from individuals and corporations.
This was the second fundraiser of its kind. The first one took place in 2009, raising DKK 5.2 million.
“I’m speechless,” said Durita Tausen, chairwoman of the Faroese Cancer Society (pictured on the right above), when the final sum was announced last night.
Much-needed money
“We will spend the money on supporting cancer patients and their families, as well as funding cancer research.”
She added that her greatest wish is that the Cancer Society will see the same fate as the Faroese Tuberculosis Society, which was scrapped because there was no longer any use for it.
“We have some way to go to reach that goal, of course, but we hope to see fewer and fewer people diagnosed with cancer – and that those who do will be cured.”
