Faroe Games launching this summer
The cancellation of this Island Games in Guernsey has created a vacuum for Faroese athletes, according to ÍSF, the Faroese Confederation of Sports and Olympic Committee.
Hoping to fill this vacuum, ÍSF is now launching its own multi-sports sports event, Føroyaleikir, also known as Faroe Games.
The games, scheduled for 8-11 July 2021, are intended as a recurring biannual event to be run in opposite years to the biannual Island Games.
A big event
All 24 of ÍSF’s member associations have been invited to organise their own competitions separately, and up to 1,500 athletes, coaches and assistants are expected to participate in the games.
The inaugural games will take place across four municipalities: Tórshavn, Vágur, Klaksvík and Runavík.
“We hope Faroe Games will evolve from being a local sports meeting to one day becoming a major event that attracts elite athletes from abroad,” says Faroe Games organiser Andras Nolsøe.
