Vaccine passports possibly delayed
Faroese vaccine passports may not be ready by 1 July when the EU introduces its passport scheme

The European Union announced last Friday that its digital vaccine passport scheme will be up and running on 1 July.

This will open up for travel between the member nations for holders of the vaccine passport.

Faroese authorities are also working on a digital passport, which will be compatible with the EU system.

It is, however, too early to say exactly how the Faroese passport will function.

“We received the technical requirements today, so we haven’t finalised our technical plans yet. But our system will most likely be based on so-called QR codes,” National Hospital CEO Steinar Eirikstoft said yesterday.

No health data shared

When a traveller scans this QR code, data pops up on a screen telling the authorities whether the person has been vaccinated by an EU approved health authority.

“The data that’s shared consists of keys, and no health data is shared,” he explains.

It is not yet clear whether the Faroese solution will be linked to the Danish vaccine passport scheme.

“This is an ambitious project, and we cannot guarantee that we will be able to complete our system by 1 July.”
