All large social events, including all nightlife, should be called off over the coming week, says Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen.

This comes in the wake of today’s announcement of eight new Covid cases, of which five had not been in quarantine.

Speaking during a break at today’s epidemic commission meeting, police chief Michael Boolsen, who heads the commission, said: “We are struggling to get the Covid-19 situation under control, with a great deal of community spread. I would recommend that we cancel all social events, public and private alike, over the coming week.”

One week with no nightlife

The Prime Minister, who was also present at the meeting, agrees with the police chief and recommends that all social events, especially nightlife activities, should be cancelled over the next week.

“We are only a few weeks away from achieving herd immunity with our vaccination programme, so I urge everyone to exercise great caution over the coming week,” he said.

“Since especially young people are getting infected now, I strongly recommend that all nightlife takes a break for a week.”

Earlier today, the organisers of Tórshavn’s Culture Night and Klaksvík’s Norðoyastevnan announced that their events, scheduled for this weekend, have been cancelled or postponed. The Tórshavn Marathon has also been postponed.

“I’m happy to see that many organisations have already displayed great responsibility by cancelling their events this weekend even before we go public with our wish to call off these events,” said the Prime Minister.“

After more than a year with this pandemic hanging over our heads, we now only need this one last time-out to reach herd immunity and then we can return to normal life.”

He urged anyone who feels even the slightest symptoms to get tested immediately, adding that testing capacity will be increased if necessary.

New cases in Vágar

Chief medical officer Lars Fodgaard Møller said earlier today that a few of the recent positive Covid tests were registered in Vágar, where several footballers were infected during a match.

The epidemic commission will meet again on Tuesday to evaluate the outcome of this weekend.
