Smoking is on a steady decline in the Faroes.

The latest figures from the Public Health Board show that 17 percent of adults are active smokers. This is less than half of the 39 percent who smoked 20 years ago.

According to the Faroese figures in the 2019 ESPAD (The European School Survey Project on Alcohol and other Drugs), less than 7 percent of 15-year-olds were active smokers, compared to 20 percent in 2009.

The Public Health Board said in May last year that 80 percent of smokers express a desire to quit.

Statistics indicate that each failed attempt at quitting smoking increases the chances of succeeding at the next attempt.
