There are about 4,000 active Covid cases in the Faroes, yet no Covid patients are in hospital.

This suggests that it is relatively safe to start implementing a Covid exit strategy, Prime Minister Bárður á Steig Nielsen announced today at a press conference.

“It is time to move on and learn to live with Covid-19 as part of our daily lives. We hope to see the infection curve flatten out over the next two weeks and then our exit plan can begin,” he said.

This plan consists of three stages, spread over three dates – 1 February, 15 February and 28 February.

Until 1 February, mass gatherings remain limited to 100 people, although exceptions may be allowed. Event organisers are advised to consult with the health authorities (corona@arb.fo).

On 1 February, the plan is to reopen nightlife. People who have received at least two vaccine shots will not be required to quarantine, even after direct exposure to an infected person. PCR testing should be limited to those who display symptoms, whose close contacts (cohabitants) have tested positive or those who have positive results from their home tests (quick tests). Others are advised to use home tests.

From 15 February, only infected people will be required to quarantine. Others are advised to practice caution.

The plan is to remove all restrictions on 28 February, provided the hospitals can cope with the number of Covid patients and no further unforeseen complications arise.
