Residents living near ports across the country have for years been complaining about low-frequency noise from ships docked in the ports.

On January 1 of this year, a new set of regulations came into force placing limits to acceptable noise levels.

Until 1 July 2023, this limit will be 58 decibels (dB) at night and 60 dB during the day, after which time the limit will go down to 56 dB at night and 58 dB during the day. On 1 January 2025, the limit will be set at 54 dB/56 dB.

Harbour masters say that many ships have made efforts to reduce their noise levels since the new regulations came into force.

Four ships have been ordered to cut their noise levels if they want to continue their activities at Faroese ports.

Noise measurements are carried out regularly, but harbour masters encourage residents to continue to report unacceptable noise levels.

About 275 noise measurements have been made in Faroese ports since last autumn.
