Negotiations on a new fisheries deal between the Faroes and Russia are due to start in October/November.

Fisheries minister Árni Skaale expects some degree of criticism, e.g. from the EU, if the current deal is renewed.

He does, however, expect most nations to acknowledge the necessity of such a deal.

“The Faroese Parliament has agreed that we should strive to maintain our good fisheries relations with Russia. Cutting off these relations may disrupt sustainable fishing operations in the North Atlantic,” he says.

“There will be some criticism, but through our talks with our international partners, we get the impression that most nations recognise the special position that the Faroe Islands have in the international management of North Atlantic fisheries.”

A possible new one-year deal is scheduled to be signed in December.
