With Black Friday just around the corner, retailers are urged to ensure that discounted prices are appropriately and properly set.

The original price of a discounted product must be directly visible to the customer, and it must be verifiable, says the Consumer Watchdog Agency.

Retailers are also encouraged to display the lowest previous price on all discounted items.

The marketing law states that an item must have been available at the advertised original price for at least six weeks for the original price to qualify as a ‘before price’ in an advert. For groceries and seasonal items such as Christmas decorations, this period is four weeks.

Consumers are encouraged to take a closer look at whether a price really has been discounted and check if it is cheaper in another store.

They are also reminded to practise common sense and check all applicable rates if they take out a loan for a major purchase such as furniture or a car.
