Substance abuse therapy for inmates

The Mjørkadalur detention centre has for years been calling for better in-house treatment options for the many inmates with drug and alcohol problems.
Inmates have had limited access to therapy for some time, but thanks to new legislation, this access will now be expanded with the appointment of a part-time substance abuse therapist.
The therapist will be working with prison staff to ensure a safe transition from prison to freedom, with continuing treatment after inmates are released.

“The new therapist will be appointed on a part-time basis as we currently only have capacity for 14 inmates,” says Elkin Klettheyggj, departmental manager at the Prison Service.
“Our facilities are a bit cramped at the moment, but our politicians have been talking about building a larger prison in the Faroes.”
