300+ operations postponed until next year

More than 300 surgical operations and 2,200 medical consultations have been postponed or cancelled since the nurse strike began on 2 October.
Hospital admissions have gone down by 25-30 percent. On children’s wards, this figure is close to 50 percent.

“This backlog will take a long time to clear. It obviously affects our patients, and remaining hospital staff are feeling the pressure,” says says Tummas í Garði, chief operative officer at the National Hospital.
“The motivation and mood of hospital staff has clearly been affected by the strike.”
There does not seem to be much progress in talks between the opposing parties in the strike: the nurses' union and the finance ministry.
