Youth hostel opens in Svínoy
The island of Svínoy now has a youth hostel which can accommodate 32 people. It consists of eight rooms, a common room and a kitchen.
Visit Norðoy will be administering the hostel in consultation with locals in Svínoy.
A one-year trial administration agreement between Klaksvík Municipality, which includes Svínoy, and Visit Norðoy was signed yesterday.
The first public event at the hostel, locally known as Gamligarður, will be a free-for-all breakfast at 9 am tomorrow as part of the Outlying Islands Festival. This will be followed by the general assembly of the Outlying Islands Association at 10:30 am.
The building was originally meant to be used as a commune, with the aim of creating jobs and breathing new life into the village. But it was later decided that it should be used for tourism purposes instead.
