Outfield cottage fire remains a mystery
Police in Tórshavn contacted authorities in Klaksvík early this morning following reports of a large fire south of Klaksvík.
A helicopter was called in, and on its way to Klaksvík the crew soon realised that the mountain cottage had burned to the ground.
The cottage, which was built in 2014, was used by shepherds. A few young men were in the cottage until Saturday afternoon, after which the cottage stood empty.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, and it is especially puzzling that the fire started some 36 hours after the young shepherds had left the cottage.
A gas cooker and a wood stove were in the cottage, but they had been turned off by 3:30pm on Saturday.
Only ash remains of the cottage, and according to Klaksvík marshall Karl Johansen it is unlikely that it will be rebuilt.
“We put in a massive effort to build this cottage, and I’m not sure we will be able to do it all over again.”
