Nes Municipality will be using stone drilled from the Eysturoyartunnil undersea tunnel project to expand the sea wall at the Toftir port.

Some 90,000 cubic metres of stone will be used to for the 90-metre expansion. This involves a significant pollution risk as the stone contains large amounts of plastic from the explosives cables used for the tunnel drilling.

“This is an expensive project for us, but we will make every effort to keep plastic pollution to a minimum,” says mayor Jóhannus Danielsen.

The Town Council is planning to install a floating tube with a net submerged one metre into the water. This net will capture most of the plastic that would otherwise end up in the sea.

“After every day when stone is dropped into the water, we will clean the net,” says Danielsen. “We will also be tidying up along the shore on a regular basis.”
