Closer cooperation needed in the tourism industry
Poul Michelsen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which includes tourism, met with Visit Faroe Islands and the Local Authorities’ Association last week.
The meeting focused on how national and local authorities can improve their collaboration regarding the tourism industry. The objective was to discuss the best ways to organise the tourism industry in a way that benefits the country, the municipalities, the business community and the visitors.
“The public authorities are always willing to play their part, but natural and healthy development requires initiative from the business community, the people and from the municipalities where the planned development takes place,” said Michelsen.
The minister added that the Faroese tourism industry ought to prioritise quality over quantity when thinking about tourists.
Approximately 600 people work full time in the tourism industry. The annual turnover of the industry is estimated at DKK 600 million. Some 100,000 tourists visit the Faroe Islands every year.
