Home games to be played in Denmark
The European Handball Federation (EHF) has informed the Faroese Handball Federation (HSF) that the national team cannot play its home games in a Faroese hall. It has been clear for some time that the Faroese team would probably have to travel overseas to play its home games, since none of the Faroese sports halls meet international requirements.
HSF applied for a dispensation for the sports hall á Hálsi in Tórshavn, the badminton hall in Klaksvík and the Marghøllin multisports hall in Vágur, Suðuroy. The first two of these were dismissed immediately, while the EHF took a further look at the possibility of approving the Marghøllin.
It has now been decided that the Marghøllin will not be granted dispensation from the EHF rules. The reasons include inadequate accommodation services in Suðuroy and the long distance from the airport to Suðuroy.
This leaves the Faroese team with no other choice but to play its home games abroad, and HSF has decided on Denmark.
Denmark will, coincidentally, also be the first home-game opponent. The game will be played at the Skjern Bank Arena on 27 October.
The Faroese team is grouped with Denmark, Montenegro and Ukraine in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
