Cancer deal with Danish hospital
The National Hospital has terminated its contract with its resident cancer surgeon and has signed a new agreement with Aalborg Hospital in Denmark.
Faroese breast cancer patients have been campaigning hard to hold on to the current system with Icelandic breast cancer surgeon Skúli Ásgeirsson.
But it is now clear that this collaboration is coming to an end, and from next year Aalborg Hospital will be taking care of Faroese breast cancer patients.
Jóanis Erik Køtlum, the head of the National Hospital, says the deal with Aalborg Hospital offers improved coordination and gives patients a better general service than the current system can.
According to the new agreement, most breast cancer patients will receive surgical operations in the Faroes.
One of the reasons that Faroese breast cancer patients have been so fond of the Icelandic specialist is that in addition to being a breast cancer specialist, he is also a plastic surgeon.
Køtlum says that the deal with Aalborg Hospital will also give Faroese women access to plastic surgery.
The contract with Kristian Skúli Ásgeirsson is due to expire on 1 January.
