Proposal to axe fish auctions

Fólkaflokkurin (the People’s Party) has submitted two proposals to scrap the fish auction system.

One of the proposals seeks to take away the Minister of Fisheries’ mandate to trade fishing licences through auctions.

The other aims to cancel the authority to sell part of the Flemish Cap quotas.

According to Fólkaflokkurin, the auction system under the new fisheries act is fundamentally flawed. The system causes unease and, according to the party, most of the fisheries industry says the current auction system is a big step backwards in the recent development of the fisheries industry.
