Emissary in Denmark can reside in the Faroes
There is nothing illegal in the Head of the Representation of the Faroes in Copenhagen residing in the Faroes and only occasionally travelling to Denmark.
But the foreign ministry ought to inform Parliament of the real circumstances behind this work arrangement, with details about the work and how the emissary’s time is distributed between the Faroes and Denmark.
This became clear after Prime Minister Aksel V. Johannesen replied to an enquiry from MP Edmund Joensen about the Head of the Representation in the Danish capital.
When Sigmund Isfeldt completed his term as the Head of the Representation in autumn 2016, it was decided to delay the appointment of a new head due to a general assessment of the representative office system.
Isfeldt has served the same function since 2016 but is now based in the Faroes as part of his job at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Although the assessment report on the representative offices was completed last autumn and foreign minister Poul Michelsen decided not to shut down the representation office in Copenhagen, no Copenhagen-based representative has yet been nominated.
The Prime Minister says that a full-time Copenhagen resident will be nominated for the position once certain unspecified conditions are met.
