The Midwives’ Union intensified its industrial action yesterday when the head midwife at the National Hospital went on strike.

Since the strike began on Thursday, the head midwife has been responsible for childbirth while also overseeing discussions about strike exceptions.

These areas will now be taken over by the National Hospital’s gynaecologists, which means that the midwives’ strike now also affects areas other than just the maternity ward, says Jóanis Erik Køtlum, CEO of the National Hospital.

He adds that many of the regular gynaecological procedures will be put on hold during the strike, although all urgent procedures will be carried out.
