A visit to popular tourist spot now costs DKK 450
Trælanípan, the steep cliff at the southernmost end of Leitisvatn from which slaves and criminals used to be hurled, has proved a bit too popular with tourists.
An ever-increasing number of visitors to the area is taking its toll on wildlife and the terrain.
The result is that the grass and the footpaths are worn down, and sheep and birds are being disturbed.
Temporary solution
This has prompted locals to introduce a DKK 450 charge for the 3km walk to the cliff.
According to lawyer Jógvan Páll Lassen, there is nothing illegal in introducing such a fee, but he believes that farmers and other locals can come up with a better solution in collaboration with Visit Faroe Islands.
The new charge only applies to foreign visitors and large groups. Local individuals are still allowed to walk in the area free of charge.
