New statue unveiled in Klaksvík

Many people gathered in Klaksvík on Tuesday for the unveiling of country’s first statue of a named woman.
The statue of Elinborg Lützen (1919-1995), the country’s first graphic designer, is the result of a collaboration between Klaksvík City Council, Norðoya Sparikassi bank and sculptor Hans Pauli Olsen.
Known primarily for her linoleum artworks and book cover decorations, Lützen was a highly respected artist, who in 1978 was the first woman to be awarded the annual mark of honour from the Parliament. In 1980, she won Tórshavn City Council’s annual Children’s Book Award.
From 1947 to 1981, Lützen lived in the house known among locals as ‘faktorshúsini’ next to where the statue stands.
She was married to internationally famous Faroese artist Sámal Joensen-Mikines from 1944 to 1952.
