Major repairs required on Tórshavn’s new quay
Four metres of the new quay in Tórshavn harbour will soon be dug up again to fix about a hundred faulty anchor bolts.
It emerged towards the end of last year that in the section of the harbour expansion that was due for completion in October 2019, about half of the 200 bolts that anchor the quay to the sea floor had cracked.
These cracked bolts are attached to the otherwise completed part of the quay. Cracks have also appeared in anchor bolts at the part of the quay which is still being constructed.

The new repair project involves digging up four metres of the new quay, although the cracked bolts are eight metres below the sea floor.
“The damaged anchors will stay where they are, and then we will install new, more sturdy ones, four metres above them, and they will act as compensatory replacements for the faulty bolts,” says harbour master Jónsvein Lamhauge.
”Our tests have shown that this is the safest and most efficient way of solving the problem as there will be significantly less digging and also no disturbance of the undamaged anchors.”
According to the harbour master, repair work will start in the next few weeks. The first part of the new quay is scheduled to be ready this summer, and the rest of the expanded harbour in the autumn, by which time the complete harbour expansion project will be more than one year overdue.
