Unemployment approaching pre-Covid levels

Unemployment approaching pre-Covid levels
The number of people receiving unemployment benefits today is 304, compared to 289 when the Covid-19 lockdown began in March

The labour market activity level is now roughly the same as in Mid-March when the Covid lockdown was introduced.

Over the past month, 127 people who received regular unemployment benefits are now back in employment. There are now 304 unemployment benefits claimants, which is only 15 more than on 12 March.

The main reason for this is a continued demand for workers, says Magni á Deild Olsen, CEO of employment service ALS.

“Another reason is that this is the start of the new school term, and many unemployment benefits claimants have now gone to school.”
