Hospital boss: vaccinations completed by summer

Most people in the Faroes are expected to be vaccinated by the end of June.

So says Tummas í Garði, COO of the Hospital Service, who is also a member of the vaccination group, which today finalised the national vaccination strategy.

He says that by the end of this week, all frontline health workers and care home staff will have received their first dose of the vaccine.

“Next up will be vulnerable people and relatives who provide essential care to these people. Next are elderly people living at home but who require help with daily activities. And then the list will continue according to vulnerability levels and age.”

The Faroese Health Authorities have been assured that the country will have received at least 7,800 doses of the vaccine by the end of March.

“By April, we expect to have vaccinated everyone above the age of 65,” says Garði, “and we expect to see an increased supply of vaccines by then.”

Self-register for vaccination

Instead of receiving an invitation from the health authorities to receive the vaccine, people will need to self-register for vaccination via a system similar to the one currently being used for Covid testing.

“The details regarding this registration system will be announced soon,” he adds.

Vaccinations will take place at the country’s three hospitals, and one or more mobile vaccination units will be deployed to travel to more remote parts of the country.
