Plans to uncover river running through Tórshavn
The river running through Tórshavn was partially covered up in the 1960s from near the site of the city’s theatre all the way down to the estuary in the marina.
This was done to make way for the increasing number of cars and to get rid of the rats dwelling by the river at the time.
But now, after years of pleas from residents to restore the river to its former glory, the City Council has agreed to look into the matter.
“There appears to be an overwhelming wish among the city’s residents to uncover the river,” says Tróndur Sigurðsson, who heads the council’s city planning committee.
“We have now agreed to set aside DKK 1 million for feasibility studies, which include looking at how the sewerage and traffic complications can be solved.”
