A good summer for Norrøna

After a slow start to the year, passenger numbers on cruise ship Norrøna have picked up significantly in the past couple of months.
“We had a couple of semi-decent months last summer but as we all know, last year was pretty much a write-off for the entire tourism industry,” says Smyril Line marketing manager Henny á Líknargøtu.
High hopes
“May and June of this year were slow, but since July, our passenger numbers have risen dramatically. So we are very excited for the remainder of this tourist season.”
She adds that if the current momentum continues into September and October, it is likely that Norrøna will enjoy pre-Covid passenger numbers as early as next year, which is much sooner than the company expected a few months ago.
Makeover paying off
So it would appear that the Smyril Line management’s prediction from earlier this year is coming true.
Speaking after Norrøna’s DKK 100 million makeover in March, the then Smyril Line CEO, Rúni Vang, said:
“We are optimistic about the second half of this year and for subsequent years. We believe this was the right moment to make these upgrades. We are confident that our passengers will be impressed with the changes, and we are also confident that this investment will pay off.”
A more spacious ferry
And Henny á Líknagøtu agrees:
“We hear many passengers complimenting us on our upgraded cabins and not least on how spacious the common areas have become,” she says.
“There’s more space for our passengers to enjoy themselves – and of course it’s much easier to keep a safe distance now.”
Most passengers this year have been Danish, German or Faroese residents, she adds.
