Zuckerberg apologises
Facebook did not do enough to prevent a private analysis firm from abusing personal data from 87 million Facebook users.
“I apologise for that,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the Senate last night.
He said that his company has started examining apps that have access to Facebook user data.
The number of apps with access to Facebook user data may be in the tens of thousands.
”It will take time to bring about these changes, but it is my duty to do this the right way,” said the 33-year-old.
Last night’s hearing in Senate was the first of two, with the second one due today.
It recently emerged that British analytics firm Cambridge Analytica had gained access to personal data from some 87 million Facebook users.
This data is believed to have been used to influence American voters in the 2016 Presidential Elections.
“We will now be investigating exactly what Cambridge Analytica did,” said Zuckerberg.
Shortly after last night’s hearing started, Facebook shares rose by 4,6%, which is the greatest increase since the privacy scandal emerged last month.
