Danish stand-in midwives “undermine strike”
Two Danish midwives, who have been called in to help at the National Hospital, are sabotaging the current industrial action, says Midwives Union

The Midwives’ Union further intensified its strike on Saturday, refusing to provide assistance even in urgent cases.

However, the effect of this measure was limited, since two Danish substitute midwives started working at the National Hospital’s maternity ward that same day.

Annika Hoydal, the head of the Faroese Midwives’ Union, sees this as sabotage of the strike:

“It appears that there’s a temp agency in Denmark that simply does not respect our right to take industrial action by picking two midwives with no union contract and sending them to the Faroes to work,” she says.

She adds that the Midwives’ Union has support from its counterparts in all the Nordic countries.

“The Danish Midwives’ Union has been in touch with numerous temp agencies across Denmark. All of them, except this particular one, say that they do not break up strikes.”
