Ship-owners warn against transfer of jurisdiction
Merchant ship-owners have expressed concerns over the upcoming transfer of maritime law from Danish to Faroese authorities

When Faroese authorities take over the maritime law jurisdiction next summer, it is crucial that this does not have a negative effect on the Faroese maritime industry.

The Association of Merchant Ship-owners has called on the Foreign Affairs Committee to highlight potential problems with the takeover.

The association finds it odd that the jurisdiction transfer proposal was submitted to Parliament with no prior analysis of the consequences and the adjustments required to make it work in practice.

Takeover “will add further confusion”

In its letter to the Foreign Affairs Committee, the association argues that Faroese authorities are currently struggling to understand international treaties on maritime trade and how they should be implemented.

This will most likely become even more confusing, the ship-owners argue, once the maritime law jurisdiction has been transferred to the Faroes.
