Four people are currently being treated at the National Hospital’s special Covid-19 unit.

Located in the hospital's so-called A3 wing, the Covid-19 unit has a maximum capacity of five patients.

If more than five Covid patients are hospitalised, they will be placed in the B7 unit of the hospital. Should this become necessary, non-Covid patients in B7 will either be moved to another unit within the National Hospital or to the hospitals in Klaksvík or Tvøroyri.

“We have special procedures in place for scenarios where the number of Covid-19 patients exceeds five,” says Steinar Eirikstoft, CEO of the National Hospital.

“But it appears likely that one of the four patients currently receiving care in our Covid-19 unit will be discharged tonight or tomorrow, so we haven’t quite reached our full capacity yet.”

According to consultant doctor Bjarni á Steig, two of the four Covid patients are young people and the other two are in their 70s. None of them are undergoing respirator treatment.

A special sanitary tent for Covid-19 patients is currently being set up outside the National Hospital, but it is not yet clear whether it will be ready to use by 1 September as planned.
