According to the current plan, work on new tunnels Norður um Fjall (Klaksvík-Árnafjørður and Árnafjørður-Norðtoftir) will not start until 2022.

But prime minister Aksel V. Johannesen now says that the government is looking at starting the project earlier. He adds, however, that no final decision has been made yet.

“We are hoping to update the investment plan so that preparation work can be completed by 2019, and then we can start the tunnel construction work ahead of schedule,” he says.

Public servants in the Ministry of Transport, the Ministry of Finance and the Prime Minister’s Office are currently re-analysing investment options after the recent dispute about prioritisation of tunnel work elsewhere in the country.

“We will conclude our analyses later this summer,” said the Prime Minister.
