Tórshavn City Council last week approved a marriage license application fee for foreign nationals.

Faroese municipalities are not authorised to charge for marriage applications, but Tórshavn City Council will now apply to the Ministry of Social Affairs for authorisation to charge people with a non-Faroese background who get married in the municipality.

Tórshavn municipality hosted 60 marriage ceremonies last year, 23 of which involved foreign nationals who only came to the Faroe Islands for the purpose of getting married.

In Denmark, a marriage license application fee costs DKK 1,650.
