The Faroese Football Association announced yesterday that Håkan Ericson will manage the national football team over the next four years.

The 59-year-old Swedish coach has worked for the Swedish Football Association since 2009, including a spell from 2011 to 2017 as the manager of the Swedish U21 men’s national football team, which won the UEFA European U21 Championships in 2015.

Like most of his predecessors, most of whom have been foreign nationals, Ericson will be residing in his home country and commute to the Faroes on a regular basis.

Analytic coach

At yesterday’s press conference, Ericson described himself as an analytic coach with a heavy emphasis on statistics, which he uses to set goals for various parts of the game, such as passes and ball possession.

“I have been told that I have a pedagogical approach to the game, and that I am good at giving clear instructions,” he said.

“I am not going to promise results straight away – anyone who does that clearly has no understanding of sports.”
